FCC commissioners celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 with a bipartisan, reflective gathering. The event included a webinar and a reception, highlighting ongoing convergence in communications policy.

During a commemorative event, FCC commissioners maintained a bipartisan tone as they toasted the 30th anniversary of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Chairman Brendan Carr (R) and Commissioner Anna M. Gomez (D) greeted attendees and reflected on how the act reshaped the communications landscape over three decades.

Carr thanked Gomez for organizing the webinar and reception, noting that Gomez is a trusted partner and a friend. He added that the act’s legacy endures as technology converges more than ever across platforms.

Gomez, speaking from the agency’s side, praised Carr and described the act as the last major federal effort to establish a regulatory framework for technology, media, and telecom sectors. She emphasized that the act spurred healthy competition that benefited consumers.

Gomez recalled the act’s early implementation period as exceptionally busy for the FCC, while underscoring her pride in being on the ground floor of a pivotal era for communications history.

The anniversary event brought together numerous policy experts involved in the act’s passage, underscoring ongoing debate about how to balance innovation with consumer protections in a rapidly changing landscape.

The gathering highlighted that while the Act marked a milestone, the work continues as convergence of technologies reshapes the industry. Attendees left with a shared view that ongoing adaptation will define federal policy for years to come.
