Surf Internet's fiber footprint expanded to 250,000 homes in the Great Lakes region, reflecting a record-building year and a push into rural communities.

Surf Internet has connected 250,000 homes with fiber across Indiana, Illinois and Michigan, a milestone it calls its strongest construction year in its 25-year history. Through November, the company reported more than 66,500 passings and projects to exceed 75,000 by year’s end after expanding into 40 new markets in 2025.

Company officials credit accelerated construction, strategic grant funding, and partnerships with local communities for the growth, highlighting a focus on rural towns and mid-sized municipalities that previously lacked fiber infrastructure.

“Every mile of fiber represents a community gaining access to opportunity, growth, and connection,” said founder and CEO Gene Crusie. “Delivering fiber internet to 250,000 homes isn’t just a milestone; it’s a transformation marker for the Great Lakes region.”

Surf reported hiring 90 new employees this year across engineering, construction, customer care, and field service, underscoring the scale of its work with local partners. COO Brent Williams credited the teamwork of field crews and contractors with keeping pace in 2025.

With 2026 on the horizon, Surf plans to accelerate construction further, leveraging state and federal broadband grants, including BEAD program funds designed to close gaps in underserved areas.
